Jim advises media organisations around the world on how to develop their business in both product and practice.
He set up his first consultancy company in 1993. For ten years until 2006, he was Strategy Advisor, and Executive Committee member for the World Association of Newspapers for whom he created and directed the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper programme. In addition he has been an adviser to the European Commission on newspaper distribution, produced a ten year forecast for the US Newspaper Industry for the Newspaper Association of America, and devised the marketing strategy for the UK Newspaper Society.
Jim started his career as an analyst at The Guardian, and spent his early years in the industry in research and strategy before moving into general management with Thomson, Mirror Group and Bonnier. During his career he worked on the launch of a number of daily and Sunday, paid and free newspapers, as well as magazines, websites, and radio stations.
As a consultant he works with many of the world’s leading newspaper and communications organisations. Projects range from devising corporate and business development strategies to producing detailed analyses and forecasts regarding the industry’s future.
A Scot, now based in Lille in France, Jim is well known internationally as an advisor, researcher, writer and presenter. Over the last sixteen years he has produced over 30 different studies covering the key strategic issues facing the newspaper industry world wide, and advised over 100 newspaper companies. His work has been presented in over 40 countries, and translated into over a dozen major languages. His monthly magazine column is syndicated to industry media worldwide.
